LFPL Maker Space Mission and Policies

The Northeast Regional Library Maker Pavilion (which includes the Maker Space, Media Studio, Kitchen and Porch) and the South Central Regional Library Maker Spaces and COLLIDER Lab are spaces for learning and exploration. They provide patrons with access to technology and tools for creation. While some tools may require additional training before use, most Maker programs are designed to accommodate all skill and experience levels. Maker spaces are intended for programming and patron use, which may include drop-in hours and events with community partners.

All Maker tools and hardware are free to use, with an assortment of consumable materials also. Patrons are encouraged to bring their own materials for projects on all machines with the exception of 3D printers. No outside filament may be used on these machines. Any outside material must be approved by library staff.

Visitors must adhere to the Library’s Rules of Behavior while in Maker spaces and on Library property.

Visitors may not imply library sponsorship or endorsement on any product created in Maker spaces.

Maker spaces and their tools are not intended for commercial use. Individual users are responsible for ensuring that they have permission to use and/or edit any material that may be subject to copyright.

Maker space policy:

Users aged 18+ are welcome to use Maker spaces independently after attending a 30-minute training, and reading and signing the Maker Pavilion Waiver. Users 13-17 must attend a 30-minute training and have an adult guardian sign the Maker Pavilion Waiver. Users 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult at all times

Items with “Training Required” labels require users to get one-on-one training before using these items independently. Users must follow the acceptable use rules below.

  • Users are responsible for abiding by copyright and patent law. Users may not use the intellectual or artistic work of others without their permission. Each user is personally responsible for appropriate and legal use of Library tools.
  • Safety is our first concern. Users are expected to use all items in Maker spaces properly and safely, and to utilize all Maker spaces in a fashion that does not damage LFPL’s or other users’ property.
  • Users are expected to clean up after themselves, including returning LFPL hardware to its storage area.
  • Creating content that contains hate speech or creating weapons is strictly prohibited. Users are expected to create content that is appropriate for the space and the audience.
  • Any accidents, including damage to LFPL property, must be reported immediately.
  • LFPL is not responsible for any personal property brought into the Maker Pavilion.
  • Some items may require a reservation before use. Please see a library staff member for assistance in booking these items.

Users may be asked to leave Maker spaces or Library property at large if they fail to comply with any of these rules.
