The GED is Free With Your Library Card!

Take the GED for free with a Louisville Free Public Library card Free testing offer continues at Louisville’s library

The Louisville Free Public Library has a deal that just can’t be beat: Get credit for what you’ve learned in the real world, and a diploma to back it up! The Library is providing funding for GED testing to any qualified GED student who has a library card.

A partnership with Jefferson County Public Schools Adult Education is making free GED testing possible. “Our students tell us that the testing fee can be a barrier to them earning a GED,” said Julie Scoskie, JCPSACE director. “This free testing offer will have a big impact.”

“The standard $40 fee has proven to be a barrier to many low-income adults who would like to earn their high school equivalency diploma,” said Library Director Craig Buthod, adding that 83 percent of those taking the test earn less than $10,000 a year. Buthod said the Library Foundation will pay testing fees for the first 1,000 test-takers.

Libraries are expected to become learning sites for students to take test preparation classes and the qualifying test. Buthod said the goal is to increase the number of people who pass the GED exam to 1,300 this year compared to 650 last year. “This is another example of how the library can support a stronger, better educated workforce in Louisville,” Buthod said.

To qualify, students need to successfully complete the GED official practice test and present their Louisville Free Public Library card. For information call JCPS, 485-3400 or visit www.adulted4u.com.
