Bookmobile
The Adult Outreach Bookmobile and two Children’s Bookmobiles were damaged beyond repair in the August 4th, 2009 flash flood. We are working hard to develop a new service plan. Please call 574-1770 for any questions you might have. We thank you for your patience during this difficult time.
LFPL's Adult Bookmobile brings the world to your doorstep! The Louisville Free Public Library (LFPL) Bookmobile makes scheduled stops, Tuesday through Friday, throughout Metro Louisville and serves hundreds of people across the county. It's equipped for easy accessibility for everyone, complete with computer access to the library's online catalog, databases and the Internet.
The Bookmobile carries hundreds of items geared towards adult readers. We stock an impressive number of new bestsellers, many of them in large print. Paperbacks, periodicals, recorded audio and video media -- even cassette players -- are available for 21-day checkout. Patrons enjoy browsing the shelves, though some prefer to reserve their books ahead of time over the phone or through the LFPL online catalog). We also offer many BiFolkal Kits to individuals and activity departments. Each kit has a theme and is designed to help preserve the memories and life experiences of individuals. Contact the Adult Outreach Department for more information about these kits, or to discuss on-site programs or book discussions for groups.
"...BiFolkal Kits Can Make History All you need is a BiFolkal kit and some older adults. Put them together and what do you get? Eye-witness accounts of the past - his story, and her story, too. With a BiFolkal kit, you can do it. The memories of people's best times - and other times, too -are waiting to be collected and preserved. BiFolkal kits are just the ticket for the time machines ready to depart from the senior center, Grandma's birthday party, a historical society meeting, a nursing home, or the folks' golden anniversary celebration. Anywhere that the experienced and the curious get together, a BiFolkal kit can go, to bring back old memories...and to create new ones." Check our list of BiFolkal Kits owned by the Library.
Kentucky has a long history of mobile library service that dates back to the 1930s, with a highly-organized bookmobile project that dates to 1954. LFPL is proud to serve thousands of underserved Metro Louisville patrons each month through two children's bookmobiles and one adult bookmobile. Our ability to serve the community continues to grow with the arrival of new vehicles, new automation software and the latest technology in wireless broadband access. For information about scheduled stops for the Adult Bookmobile or to talk to the bookmobile staff, call 574-1609 or email adultbookmobile@lfpl.org.
Children's Bookmobile
The Louisville Free Public Library operates two children's bookmobiles during the school year and summer months. The bookmobiles visit schools, community centers, and daycare centers on a monthly basis. If you would like to apply for bookmobile service at your site, please fill out this form.
The bookmobile serves primarily preschoolers, but also sites where accessibility to books is difficult and sites that are not nearby a library branch. Though our yearly schedule is set, we are able to send the bookmobile or a library staff member to special one-time events or festivals for library card signups, book check out, or storytimes. To schedule this for your event, please fill out this form.
