We Sing for a Nation

Presented by the Kentucky Opera. Celebrate the songs of slavery in the fight for emancipation. With origins in West Africa, this music served to aid in work and worship. Hidden codes in the lyrics guided slaves on how to reach free land. The musical journey continues through present day, highlighting music of the Civil Rights Movement and the continued influence of slave songs on the development of blues, jazz as well as American musical theatre and opera.
