Conversations With A Suffragist

PastTuesday, February 26, 2019 - 06:30 PM - 08:00 PM

Actor and educator Megan Burnett presents her one-woman show, “Conversations with a Suffragist: Mattie Griffith Browne – Kentucky Abolitionist and Suffragist.” Born in Owensboro, Kentucky, to a slave-holding family, Browne was determined to free the slaves she inherited from her parents. As an adult, she became a writer and poet, and wrote Autobiography of a Female Slave to raise money to free these slaves. Succeeding in doing so, she turned her activism toward suffragism and worked with Susan B. Anthony and others to obtain the right to vote for all citizens.

Megan Burnett is the Theatre Program Director and Assistant Professor of Theatre at Bellarmine University. She received her MFA from the University of Louisville. She has taught acting and voice for Folger Shakespeare Library, Kentucky Shakespeare Festival, University of Louisville, Eastern Kentucky University, Alice Lloyd College, and Spalding University. Megan is touring "Conversations with a Suffragist" in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment which gave women the right to vote.
