SUMMARY:The Known Universe: the Science of Astronomy from its Origins to Modern Times
DESCRIPTION:Discover astronomy through the perspectives of people like Aristotle\, Ptolemy\, St. Augustine of Hippo\, Tycho Brahe\, Nicolaus Copernicus\, Galileo Galilei\, \, St. Robert Bellarmine\, Isaac Newton\, William Herschel\, Fr. Georges Lemaître\, Albert Einstein\, Henrietta Leavitt and Louisville\'s own Edwin Hubble.  This class\, to be taught by Jefferson Community and Technical College physics professor Christopher M. Graney\, will focus on understanding in detail how we know what we know about the universe.  The format:  reading and discussion.  Key readings will be passed out at each class session at no cost to students.  Opportunities to view the sky with a telescope will follow after each class\, sky conditions permitting. Class times: 5:45-7:15 p.m. on five Wednesdays\, Sept. 12-Oct. 10\, 2012. Class size may be limited.  Registration required.
