ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Serves as an assistant to a senior librarian and serves the public as a resource in a specific area

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

UNDER GENERAL SUPERVISION
Catalogs books, periodicals or other materials
Advises and assists patrons on the selection, organization and interpretation of library materials
Helps patrons locate research materials
Assists in implementing special projects
Answers question in person or by telephone and conducts the needed research involved
Participates in book selection for one or more major subject matter fields
Gives talks to community groups and schools, and directs tours of the library
Plans and conducts original programs
Assists library patrons with check-out and return of materials
Assigns, supervises, and evaluates work of subordinate personnel
Serves as a resource person to assistants, clerks, and pages
Assists in the development of cataloging policies and procedures
Performs related work

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Master's degree
Library Science

OTHER MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Eligible for certificate of Librarianship from the State Board for the Certification of Librarians

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
Meets regular and punctual attendance standards and any special needs of the position as determined by management, including mandatory overtime and performing related work
Communicates with individuals in person and utilizes all types of communication media
Lifts and carries items weighing up to 20 pounds
Reviews information from video displays, printed and micro-form documents

DESIRABLES

In addition to masters degree in library science requirement - bachelorís degree in childrenís literature or other field related to working with children

Professional experience developing and providing age appropriate programs and service to children with emphasis on early childhood

Knowledge of childrenís and young adult literature

A combination of substantial coursework in childrenís literature or other field related to working with children and professional experience developing and providing age appropriate programs and service to children may be substituted for bachelorís degree in childrenís literature


PUBLIC INFORMATION SPECIALIST
SALARY:$17.40 /Hour

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Drafts speeches, news releases and correspondence
Plans and attends public meetings and presents information
Disseminates information and materials

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

UNDER ADMINISTRATIVE SUPERVISION
Composes and mails routine correspondence
Designs and develops exhibits, visual aids, brochures and promotional materials
Maintains records and files on press and public relations activities
Drafts speeches, press releases, newsletters, website text and graphics, reports, and correspondence
Presents, organizes and disseminates information concerning agency activities and operations, and coordinates mass mailings to residents and businesses
Serves as media spokesperson for the agency
Attends meetings and events to provide information and answer questions concerning agency programs, operations and services
Researches and compiles information on grant applications and related documents, histories of government agencies and special genealogical information requested in writing from the general public
Contacts printers, photographers and artists to discuss ideas and specifications for printing, photographs, artwork and graphic needs
Coordinates open records inquiries and general information requests and prepares responses
Performs related work

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

One year of community or public relations, public speaking, press relations, speech or news writing, or marketing experience
