It’s a space where every child feels seen, supported, and safe to explore, learn, and belong. That’s the vision behind a new initiative at the Louisville Free Public Library: sensory kit backpacks designed for neurodiverse youth. Made possible in part through a grant from the WHAS Crusade for Children, these library sensory kits are expected to reach an estimated 1,000 children. They are designed to help kids regulate their brain’s reactions to external and internal stimuli – something as simple as a pair of noise-canceling headphones or a textured fidget toy can make all the difference in how a young person experiences the library. Current funding will provide: • 38 kits designed for in-library use, available at every LFPL branch, filled with items like noise-canceling headphones, wobble seats, sunglasses, and fidget toys. LFPL is committed to ensuring every family can access the joy of hands-on learning and inclusive community spaces regardless of sensory needs. • 50 themed kits that families can check out and take home, focused on topics like bedtime routines, music and movement, STEAM exploration, animals and fine motor skills, and anxiety relief. Each backpack includes books and sensory items aligned with the theme. More than temporary tools, take-home kits empower families to try out resources before making a financial investment and offer new ways for children to connect with their libraries. For many families, these kits will make the difference between feeling left out and feeling like they belong. Your support makes inclusive spaces possible. Thank you to those who made this first round of sensory kits possible through private donations to the Library Foundation. Together, we are investing in equity, access, and joy. Please join us this spring by making a tax-deductible donation, sharing your library story, and advocating for increased public funding.
