LFPL.org Louisville Free Public Library News and Information JULY/AUGUST 2025 Carmichael's Kids presents bestselling authors Gordon Korman and Shannon Hale at the Main Library JULY 17 6:30pm There's still time to read & win at the Library! Summer Reading continues through August 2 at all library locations It's hard to believe summer is already halfway over, but there is still plenty of time to read and win with this year’s Summer Reading Program. Presented by the Library Foundation, Summer Reading is free for newborns to 12th graders. If you haven’t already registered – it’s not too late. Simply go to LFPL.org/SummerReading or fill out a paper form at your nearest branch. All area youth that read the required number of books before August 2 will receive a glow-in-the-dark backpack, passes to area attractions and sporting events, and some sweet treats. For more information, call (502) 574-1620 or stop by any library location today! Summer Reading Finales What better way to finish the summer than with a celebration? LFPL’s Summer Reading Finales take place at every library location the week of July 27 - August 2. Enjoy free performances, magic shows, snacks, and of course, prize giveaways! To find a Finale at a branch near you, see the calendar listing inside or visit LFPL.org/Events. Join #1 New York Times bestselling author Gordon Korman for a discussion of his latest book, Snoop, about a boy with two broken legs, too much time on his hands, and a spying habit that might sink him into deeper trouble than he realizes. AUG 30 1pm Celebrating ur Neighborhood Louisville is home to over 53,000 internationally-born residents, representing countries and communities from all over the globe. In the third year of this event series, LFPL, in partnership with Kentucky Refugee Ministries, will feature the Congolese American community. Conflicts in the Congo since 1996: Actors, Factors, and Outcomes Saturday July 26, 1 – 2:30 p.m. • Bon Air Library Dr. Patrick B. Litanga will explore the root causes of the Congolese conflict since the mid-1990s: how local, national, regional, and international actors have utilized historical grievances and how the exploitation of natural resources continues to fuel conflict in the Congo. He will touch on the eastern regions of the Congo and the populations that have borne the brunt of these armed conflicts. Learn more and register: LFPL.org/OurNeighborhood. Bestselling graphic novelist Shannon Hale (Real Friends, Best Friends, and Friends Forever) is back with a new middle grade graphic novel titled Dream On, about hope, friendship, and heartfelt wishes. Both events are free, but registration is requested – LFPL.org/Register or (502) 574-1644. Book signings will follow each event, with books available for purchase from Carmichael’s Bookstore. Programs for ADULTS SHORT COURSE Understanding Social Issues: Community, Civic Life, and Change Tuesdays, July 8 - 29, 6:30 – 8 p.m. • Main Library Social issues impact all of us – but who decides what counts as a social problem? And how do individuals and communities create meaningful change? This engaging four- session course, led by Bellarmine sociology professor Ainsley Lambert-Swain, invites participants of all backgrounds to explore how social problems are defined, framed, and addressed. Through interactive discussions and hands- on activities, participants will examine how public conversations are shaped by media, experts, and grassroots efforts. We’ll also explore how civic engagement—whether through voting, advocacy, or community organizing—plays a role in shaping policies and solutions.
