FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE New news release color Library: Paul Burns, (502) 574-1683 Mayor Greenberg, Louisville Free Public Library roll out new Bookmobile, expanding library services across the community LOUISVILLE (September 12, 2025) – Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg, Library Interim Executive Director Barbara Sexton Smith, and Metro Councilwoman Josie Raymond, joined Louisville Free Public Library outreach staff today at Active Day of Watterson Park Adult Day Care to unveil the Library’s new bookmobile. This custom-designed mobile library will deliver books and other materials to adults in care facilities, housing communities, shelters, and other areas with limited access. In addition, Library staff plan to visit parks, shopping centers, community events, and more to help deliver library services to more people across Jefferson County. "Too often, the people who could benefit from library resources the most face the greatest barriers to accessing them. Bookmobiles allow us to bridge that gap—bringing books and services directly to where they’re needed," said Mayor Greenberg. "This mobile library will not only increase access to books, but will foster community engagement, helping make Louisville an even safer, stronger, healthier and more connected community.” “Having this new bookmobile will make it possible for our library team to deliver services to more people in more places, allowing us to meet people where they are,” said Library Interim Executive Director Sexton Smith. “Thanks to the support of Mayor Greenberg, Metro Council, and donors to the Library Foundation, we are excited to further LFPL’s commitment to ensuring that everyone in our city has the broadest possible access to library resources.” The new bookmobile was made possible through a $250,000 budget allocation from Mayor Greenberg and Metro Council, with an additional $116,000 from the Library Foundation. This included $20,000 for new books and materials. “Community support is what turns great ideas into real services,” said Chandra Gordon, Executive Director of The Library Foundation. “We’re proud to help launch the adult bookmobile and its opening day collection—bringing books and resources directly to those who can’t always visit a library branch.” "As someone who is raising three young readers, I am in our libraries every week, consistently amazed at the great work our library staff does to stock new releases and put on engaging events,” said Councilwoman Raymond. “I am thrilled to see the bookmobile fleet grow, so that people who lack transportation or have mobility issues can also get their hands on materials that make them laugh, cry, and think."
