Come From Away is an award-winning Broadway musical based on true events in the small town of Gander, in Newfoundland, Canada. During and immediately after the 9/11 attacks on the United States, 38 commercial aircraft with nearly 7,000 passengers aboard were ordered to land at Gander’s airport. The residents of Gander (population at the time: 11,254) scrambled to feed, shelter, and, most importantly, welcome thousands of passengers. The compassion and kindness of the citizens of Gander and their generosity toward stranded passengers created enduring friendships and connections among people who had been complete strangers. Irene Sankoff and David Hein, who wrote the book, music, and lyrics for Come From Away, will give a public presentation as this year's recipients of the Spalding Prize for the Promotion of Peace and Justice in Literature, awarded by the Naslund-Mann Graduate School of Writing at Spalding University. The program is free and open to the public . Registration information is below. IROQUOIS Tue., Nov. 25, 11:15 AM (English/Spanish) Give a Gift That Speaks Volumes Celebrate a loved one this holiday season with their name in a library book. Some gifts are opened once. This holiday season, the Library Foundation invites you to celebrate someone special with a gift that will be opened again and again. With a donation of $100 or more, you can honor a loved one, mentor, or friend with a personalized bookplate placed inside a new book in the Louisville Free Public Library’s circulating collection. Each time the book is opened, a reader will see your honoree’s name and a note of recognition. This lasting tribute is perfect for someone who “has everything” or who believes in the power of stories to bring people together. As a meaningful alternative or addition to traditional gift-giving, your donation helps write the next chapter for our library by supporting new books, programs, and resources that inspire learning and connection across our community. Give a gift that truly speaks volumes. Make your donation today to let your tribute be discovered and appreciated by readers for years to come. Share the joy of reading. Honor someone you love with a Louisville Free Public Library bookplate. Want your honoree to hear the good news by December 25? Make your gift by December 5 for mailed notifications or December 12 for email delivery. To learn more and help support your Louisville Free Public Library, visit LFPLFoundation.org.
