The multi-year, $9.9 million project has dramatically transformed Portland Library into a modern, fully accessible community space that blends the charm of its 1913 Carnegie architecture with a new, contemporary 5,400-square-foot addition. The updated facility features a larger collection of books and materials, additional computers, separate children’s and teen areas, comfortable furnishings, meeting spaces, and a makerspace. Located at 3305 Northwestern Parkway, the hours of operation are Monday - Thursday: 9 a.m. - 8 p.m., Friday-Saturday: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Sundays: 1 p.m. - 5 p.m. Check the calendar listing inside to find a variety of programs and classes being offered every month for adults, teens, and kids. The library project was made possible with funding allocated by Mayor Greenberg and Louisville Metro Council through capital and American Rescue Plan funds, with additional funding raised through the Louisville Free Public Library Foundation’s One Library One Louisville Capital Campaign. New Short Course explores Alchemy and the Dark Arts in Medieval England Who was Merlin the Magician? Did Dr. Faust really sell his soul to the devil? Did the alchemist Nicholas Flamel actually discover the secret to eternal life? Join UofL professor Dr. Andrew Rabin as he examines the important role magic played in the medieval world. We will see how magical beliefs and practices became a way for people to express their deepest hopes and greatest fears. Less waiting. Love getting your hands on popular titles faster? It’s already happening at the library — and it’s just getting started. Thanks to Metro’s Million Dollar Match, shelves are fuller and wait times are shrinking. With a $1 million dollar-for-dollar match approved by Mayor Greenberg and Metro Council, every private gift for books and materials is doubled, helping the Library add more copies of the most-requested titles. The results are already powerful. Wait times for eBooks and digital audiobooks have dropped dramatically — from 30 weeks to 18, with average waits now just 28 days instead of nearly 40. That means more readers finding the right book at the right time. And we’re not done yet. Community support is fueling this momentum and ensuring more readers can find what they’re looking for without the long waits. You can be part of it. Your gift helps keep shelves stocked, waitlists short, and the joy of reading within reach for everyone. To support Metro's Million Dollar Match, visit LFPLFoundation.org, or scan the QR code. .
