Beautifully Broken Modern Kintsugi workshop: Breaking Free From Perfectionism *CLASS FULL*
About this event
Join COLLIDER Artist-in-Residence Jillian Timberlake for this Beautifully Broken Modern Kintsugi workshop as we explore society’s growing trend towards perfectionism and examine the benefits of Kintsugi’s countercultural approach to finding the beauty in the broken. In an age of photo filters, highlight reels, and obsession with youth and beauty, America’s consumeristic culture embraces an out-with-the-old / in-with-the-new mentality. Yet, Kintsugi values the history, and even the imperfection, of an item. This artform challenges the assumption that imperfection devalues and disqualifies. Kintsugi is boldly rebellious in its view that beauty can come from the broken.
During this workshop, you will walk through the Kintsugi process from start to finish as you break and repair a set of coasters. Guided writing will be incorporated throughout the process for you to reflect on the wisdom Kintsugi has to offer and ways to apply it to your own life. You will leave with a completed set of two coasters and a Beautifully Broken journal for continued reflection.
All materials will be provided. Please arrive on time, as it will take the full workshop time to complete the process. Participants will need to sign a participation waiver at the onset of the workshop. Adults only. Space is limited, email Liz.Magee@lfpl.org to sign up.
