Making your own Artist’s Book with Imaginative Observation

About this event

Body

Join COLLIDER Artist-in-Residence Daniel Vance for this workshop, introducing attendees to the world of artist’s books. Participants will be given strategies for starting their own using imaginative observation! We’ll start with a paper folding tutorial, as our artist’s books for this exercise will utilize a Turkish Map Fold for their foundation. After completing our map folds, we’ll transition to observational drawing utilizing a still life featuring a collection of unique objects. Patrons will be encouraged to treat the different sections of their map folds like panels in a comic, focusing on one small section of the still life at a time to fill in different quadrants. However, unlike traditional still life drawing, patrons will not be limited to purely drawing from observation but will be encouraged to embellish and transform the observed imagery with imaginative elements using prompts and guided questions. Attendees will also be given instruction sheets at the end of our session with steps for paper folding for future projects, as well as inspirational prompts for future map books.
