The Verge

Safe

Georgia Douglas Johnson, a well-known poet and playwright of the Harlem Renaissance, often centered her work on the Black experience in the South. In Safe, written in 1929, she tells the story of Liza and John Pettigrew, expectant parents in a small town in Georgia in 1893, who witness horrible racial violence.
